At its Aug. 18 meeting, the San Juan Water Conservancy District (SJWCD) Board of Directors approved a letter of support for the Pagosa Area Recreation Council’s (PARC’s) efforts to obtain a grant to help build capacity and continue recreation planning in the area.

Town announces east gateway river park public comment meeting on Sept. 10

In May 2025, the Town of Pagosa Springs purchased 1040 E. U.S.160, formerly known as Bob’s LP.  This strategic acquisition has provided an opportunity to expand public river access, lengthen our Riverwalk Trail corridor, provide additional wetland and park space, and establish a unique and defining recreation location for visitors and locals to see and use as they enter town. 

On Aug. 19, the Pagosa Springs Town Council approved two ordinances related to fire restrictions within town limits.  The first ordinance the council approved would make the declaration of fire restrictions an administrative task, rather than an action of the town council.

“If a State of Emergency for bear conflicts could be declared, it would be for southwest Colorado this year,” said Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Officer Doug Purcell. “Since the first week of July, we have been incredibly busy responding to human-bear conflict calls and dealing with bears desperate for food [looking] to residential communities and towns to find easy calories.”

On Aug. 19, staff from the town’s Parks and Recreation Department presented an opportunity to the Pagosa Springs Town Council for the expansion of Reservoir Hill Park.  The potential expansion would extend the park along the remainder of the hill to the south, toward County Road 119, also known as Light Plant Road. 

Audubon Rockies seeking volunteers for fall educational program

It is the commitment of volunteers that has made the Four Mile Ranch fall education program a success from its inception.  Each year, volunteers lead groups of students through the forests and bottomlands at the ranch, collectively hosting more than 800 regional students. 

Information on evacuating your horse during a fire

During the recent Oak Fire on the west side of Pagosa Springs, members of San Juan Back Country Horsemen (BCH) were called upon by the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office to assist with the possible evacuation of horses. 

Record low flow set on Piedra, matched on San Juan River

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the Piedra River near Arboles set a record low flow level on Wednesday, Aug. 13, flowing at 7.64 cubic feet per second (cfs).

Additional fire restrictions in place

Additional fire restrictions have been enacted in the area, with the Town of Pagosa Springs implementing Stage 1 restrictions and the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) moving to Stage 2 restrictions.
