San Juan National Forest
Yesterday, Thursday, Sept. 18, San Juan National Forest fire crews completed 400 acres at the Brockover Prescribed Fire Project.
Crews will remain on scene throughout the day to ensure the fire remains within control lines.
Smoke settled into nearby neighborhoods last night, but is expected to dissipate throughout the day.
The San Juan National Forest has no additional plans to burn over the weekend.
This project will reduce the threat of future wildfire to adjacent communities by reducing fuel loading. The prescribed fire is a follow-up to the mastication work that was performed two years ago through the Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Project , which significantly reduced small-diameter ladder fuels, including oak. The fire is step two in this process, consuming the remaining slash from the mastication project and reducing fuel loading even further.
