Sheriff's office: Stay out of damaged roadways, let emergency crews do their job

Posted

Archuleta County residents: We know you want to help your neighbors who may be stranded along County Road 500 and other damaged roads. Your concern for others is appreciated, but please do not attempt to deliver supplies or conduct your own rescues.

These operations require training, coordination and specialized equipment. We were excited to welcome the Colorado National Guard last night with approximately 80 personnel, 34 vehicles and two helicopters which will be used in coordination with volunteers from the Colorado Search and Rescue Association and Upper San Juan Search and Rescue to rescue those stranded behind damaged roads.

Attempting to reach stranded residents on your own puts you at risk and could create additional emergencies, taking resources away from those already in need.

The best way to help right now is to stay safe, stay out of damaged areas and let trained emergency personnel do their work.

• If you are stranded and need assistance, please call the non-emergency dispatch line at (970) 731-2160.

• If you have an emergency, call 911.

• For general questions, call the Incident Call Center at (970) 508-9928.

Please share this message to help keep our community and emergency responders safe. Thank you for your cooperation and for looking out for your neighbors.
