Dear Editor:
We are a nation that began in rebellion against an aristocratic governing class that suppressed the colonists not just by race, but by class. Class determined by wealth, not merit. Wealth bestowed power that allowed suppression and exploitation of the un-wealthy. Our democratic institutions were created to protect “we the people” from the abuses of power derived from wealth.
Capitalism works well when the rule of law and common-sense controls its tendencies to reward greed rather than the common good. The power of our institutional protections and the rule of law have eroded in the face of a political class driven by fund-raising, pursuit of personal wealth and power instead of principle.
I’m a veteran who served to protect our common rights and freedoms. So did the veterans who served before me and the ones to follow. Thank us for our service by protecting our right to vote and the local volunteers that process the votes.
And vote.
