Two Pagosa Springs High School track and field records were broken at the 30-team John Tate Steel City Fast Track Invitational on April 4 in Pueblo.
Abi Nehring, coach Connie O’Donnell highlights in an email to The SUN, set a new record in discus with a throw of 138 feet, 6 inches.
“The old record belonged to Keena Murphy set in 2017” O’Donnell notes, adding Nehring “is still ranked first in the state right now. The second ranked throw in the state is 12 feet shorter.”
Colton Lucero broke the school record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.96 seconds.
“The old record belonged to Jason Schutz in 2002,” the coach wrote. “I feel like it’s a pretty big deal when you break a 23 year old record. Colton is ranked 2nd in the state. Colton ran a great 200 also, but the wind by that time was pretty significant and so his time will not count for qualifying.”
In addition to setting records, the Pirate track and field team also notched 17 top-five finishes at the meet.
Nehring finished first in the discus with her throw, with Malorie Morton following in second with a throw of 107-1.

This week, the Pirates will be back in action in Pueblo, this time for a meet at Colorado State University Pueblo.
Action is set to begin at 9 a.m.
“We have another trip to Pueblo on Saturday. With an early morning departure and late return, it sure does make for a long day,” O’Donnell notes. “It will be really fun to compete at the Thunderbowl, CSU Pueblo’s facility. It’s a really nice facility and has hosted NCAA division 2 track championships in the past. There are 32 teams scheduled to compete. We hope to continue improving our times and marks.”
