An additional 1 to 2 inches of rain is expected across southeast Utah and southwest Colorado through Wednesday evening with locally higher amounts possible over the San Juans, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
A flood watch will be in effect from 6 a.m. Wednesday through 6 a.m. Thursday for the San Juans and Archuleta County.
Additional rainfall may result in flooding of small creeks, rivers and streams, the NWS notes in a decision support packet updated at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29. Debris flows and rockslides are also possible if thunderstorms develop this afternoon.
The packet notes a majority of the additional precipitation will fall Tuesday night through Wednesday afternoon. Scattered storms are possible over the higher terrain this afternoon.
Rivers are forecasted to crest again Wednesday night, according to the agency, with the San Juan River at Pagosa Springs anticipated to crest at about 7.91 feet. It was reported at 8.47 feet earlier in the week. The action stage for the river is 9.5 feet, with flood stage being 10.5 feet.
The Piedra River near Arboles is also projected to crest lower than the 4.23 feet observed earlier this week.
