Dimond, Pickering qualify for state

Junior Tyler Dimond and sophomore Chatwin Pickering will represent the Pagosa Springs High School Pirate golf team at next week’s state tournament in Alamosa.

Dimond qualified as the 36th-ranked golfer in the 3A classification, with Pickering heading into the state’s final tournament ranked 74th.

Eighty-four golfers advanced.

“Both of them made it, so we’re excited about that,” coach Mark Faber said.

It will be Dimond’s third trip to the state tournament and Pickering’s first.

In 2024, Dimond tied for 72nd. Last year, he tied for 56th.

The state tournament will take place on a familiar course for the pair — Cattails Golf Course in Alamosa — on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5 and 6.

The Pirates will head into the tournament with limited practice due to rains, Faber indicated.

He added the golfers will go Sunday and play a practice round at Cattails ahead of the tournament Monday and Tuesday.

Faber also highlighted the sun is supposed to be shining all three days the team will be in Alamosa.

“I want to see them both compete,” Faber said. “I think they can, and I think ... it’s a good spot. They know the course, they’ve played it enough, so, yeah, I’m expecting good things out of both of them.”

The Pirates completed their regular season on Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Intermountain League (IML) Championship at Cattails.

Pagosa took third as a team out of five teams, behind Monte Vista and Alamosa, at the rainy tournament.

“We were playing for the IML championships and through probably eight or nine holes we were leading the tournament as a team,” Faber said.

After that, whether due to the weather or something else, Faber relayed, it “got kinda tough” for the Pirates.

“They really, really started well and were playing well,” he highlighted.

Pickering led the team on the day, taking fourth out of 33 golfers with a score of 80 on the par-71 course.

Pickering’s day included shooting birdie on one hole and par on 10 holes.

“Chatwin really stepped up,” Faber highlighted. “He needed a good score. He needed to play well, and, you know, he did. Ultimately, he played well. It might’ve made the difference of whether he went to state or not. There’s a good chance it did, so good for him.”

Dimond took 10th overall with an 83, which included shooting birdie on two holes and par on seven holes.

Logan Lamoreaux finished tied for 14th with an 86. His effort included shooting birdie on one hole and par on seven holes.

Maximus Ibram took 26th with a 96, which included shooting par on three holes.

Treyson Cotts finished 31st with a 110, which included shooting birdie on one hole and par on one hole.
