Lady Pirates fall to Bloomfield

The Pagosa Springs High School Lady Pirate volleyball team fell to 4-9 after dropping a match to Bloomfield at home earlier this week.

The Lady Pirates hosted the Bobcats on Monday, Sept. 28, and lost 3-0 in their 13th match of the season.

The Bobcats came into the match with a 4-8 record, the same as the Lady Pirates, and were ranked 20th in New Mexico’s 4A division.

“It just wasn’t our night,” wrote coach Chelsea Caler in an email to The SUN. “We struggled to play as a team and to even settle into our roles. There were some good individual efforts, but we weren’t clicking together and we didn’t have the fight I know we’re capable of when we were only down a few points.”

The girls lost the first set 25-12, the second set 25-17 and the third set 25-19.

Caler explains she ended up making lineup changes in the game to give some Lady Pirates new opportunities in order to find out which of her players wanted to “step in and compete.”

The Lady Pirates have four practices, which Caler calls a “good reset,” before they travel to Alamosa on Saturday, Oct. 3, for their first game of the season against the Mean Moose.

Alamosa is 10-4 and ranked No. 6 in 3A.

The Lady Pirates will then be back in action again on Tuesday, Oct. 6, against Bayfield at home.

Earlier this season, the Lady Pirates lost 3-0 to the Wolverines in Bayfield. Bayfield is 2-10 and ranked 46th in 3A.

In order to get back in the win column, Caler states she believes that the team needs to get back to the basics.

“We’re going to slow things down, redefine roles, work through different game situations and rebuild some cohesion and confidence,” wrote Caler.

Stats for the matchup against Bloomfield were not available by press time Wednesday.
