Chas. A. Day of Pagosa Springs was designated at Denver last week as the Republican candidate for representative for the counties of Hinsdale, Archuleta and Mineral to succeed himself. So far as we have been able to learn the Republicans have not as yet designated their candidate for the 18th Senatorial district.
Harry Mee, while cranking a truck Monday morning preparatory to going to the Duncan road camp, sustained a compound fracture of the right arm that will keep him from his work for some time.
Ben Francisco was an arrival on Saturday from Pueblo to try our waters for continued ill health.

The Town Board met in regular session on Monday night of this week for the transaction of routine business matters and the hearing of employee’s reports.
Reports from the street department showed that over 20 blocks of the street and alley system had received gravel under the graveling program. This gravel was of heavy, river run size and is being laid as a base, preparatory to graveling with crushed gravel as soon as is practicable. The larger river run gravel makes a good base for the crushed gravel and will be pretty rough until such time as it is packed down.
The marshal’s report showed a large number of speeders arrested the past month, along with usual police activities. Water department reports indicated that much work remains to be done on improving the system.
The Town Board also discussed regulations concerning the use of the town fire truck outside of the city limits and certain rules were agreed upon. These rules are to be given the fire chief limits without his consent. Persons in rural areas who desire assistance from the town truck will save time by contracting fire chief Dick DeVore before turning in an alarm.

County road crews are oiling the Snowball road and Eighth Street in town is also being repaired. The county has other oiling projects throughout the county and within a few years there should be several miles of oiled road on the county system.
Retail sales, services, and industry chalked up a whopping 84.2 per cent gain in the first quarter of 1976 over the same period in 1975. This increase was from a total of all sales in the first quarter of 1975 of $1,868,000 to $3,440,000 in the first quarter of 1976.
This is attributed to three things. The first was that San Juan Lumber Co. was operating when it had not been the year before, the winter tourist business was up, and there were several people employed on the Title X program.

The Archuleta County Board of Commissioners is looking for a few good citizens, people who are concerned about roads in their areas, to serve on a planned, new Standing Road Committee.
“We want people from the Navajo, Blanco, Chromo, Arboles and other areas to be represented,” said Commissioner Alden Ecker.
“We need a road plan for the future for Archuleta County,” he said. “We must to a better job with the roads in the county and this committee is the place to start.”
Ecker said the committee is to be charged with formally establishing road classifications, degree of maintenance desired for each classification, means of removing some areas from maintenance for two-to-three year periods to allow more action in more heavily traveled areas, and develop a long-range county road plan with both expansion and maintenance priorities.
