The new Catholic church at Juanita, known as San Andres, is nearing completion and is a neat piece of workmanship, both inside and out. The building will be dedicated some time in November.
The garden at the home of J.A. Latta contains many beautiful and interesting sights. One of them is a Flemish Beauty pear tree bending to the ground with fruit, also three heavily loaded crabapple trees. A novelty, too, in the way of four “topeppo” plants, a cross between a tomato and a pepper, is an unusual spectacle. The plant is upright like a pepper plant, while the topeppo is more the shape of a tomato, somewhat fluted, but glossy green like a pepper. Dr. Mary Fisher gave nine seeds of this rare plant to Mrs. Grace Parks, who had the luck to raise four in her father’s garden.
Melvin “Toots” Lattin, who was recently kicked in the stomach by a logging horse at the Houser mill, developed acute appendicitis and hernia condition therefrom, necessitating his being removed to a Durango hospital Monday night. He was operated on the following day and is now getting along nicely.

The Pagosa Rod and Gun club will hold its regular meeting next Monday night at the Court House and will devote much of the meeting to the discussion of problems dealing with the coming big game season. They are in hopes that an adequate solution can be worked out in regards to the ever increasing problem of vandalism and trespassing.
An invitation is being extended to all ranches and land owners who have had trouble during the seasons in previous years to attend. The problems will be discussed from all angles and the Rod and Gun club has indicated that it will do everything it possibly can to help in this matter.
All members of the club should also plan to attend in order that they may be informed of the many problems facing the land owners in recent years as the result of the larger numbers of hunters coming here each year. From all indications there will be more hunters this year than ever before and game officials predict a record kill.

Eastbound travelers over Wolf Creek Pass during daylight hours should take note that new construction is underway at the Pass at the east end. New bridges and new roadway are being built and delays of one hour or more may be experienced when blasting is in progress. If you are going to the San Luis Valley, it might be well to allow some extra time.
The school enrollment continues to climb and now stands at 863 students. Pagosa Springs High School will remain in Class A athletics and activities for one more year and will then join the Southern Peaks Double A League in the San Luis Valley.
This Saturday is homecoming day for the Pagosa Pirates. The opponent is a strong Dolores team and game time is 1:30 in the town park. The Pirates will take the field in a confident mood after defeating Mancos 14-8 in the season opener last Saturday night at Mancos.

America has been attacked.
The Star Spangle Banner reigned over Pagosa Country at half staff Tuesday, even as residents responded with disbelief, horror, then outrage at scenes of terrorist-triggered carnage transmitted nearly 2,000 miles across the country to television screens and audio receivers.
Downtown streets and shops remained relatively empty through the morning hours. As the drama unfolded revealing attacks on the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C. and a plane crashed in Pennsylvania fields, many local citizens remained home, glued to television and radio sets.
Other citizens joined shop owners focused on sets at their businesses where they exchanged comments about the tragedy, forgetting the business of the day. More than a few shops closed. In response to orders from above, Pagosa Ranger District closed its doors from Tuesday afternoon through 10 a.m. yesterday.
Air traffic at Stevens Field came to a halt Tuesday morning in response to an order from the Federal Aviation Administration closing airspace in the United States to all but the military, law enforcement, and emergency medical aircraft. The closure is effective until further notice.
