Mr. and Mrs. Charley Masien and the former’s brother, Claude Masien, who claimed to be from Eldorado Springs, Missouri, and had been at the Houser mill since July, where the two young men were employed, departed the evening of Election day for parts  unknown. However, they have apparently taken with them Ethel, the 14-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Coggins, who also lives at the mill and no trace has yet been found of the quartet.

The getaway was made while Mr. and Mrs. Coggins were at the polls in Pagosa Springs, and suspicion that she had been taken by the Mesiens did not occur until later in the evening. The sheriff at Monte Vista was at once advised to be on the lookout for them, while Mr. Coggins made a quick trip to Durango by motor in the night, but without success in learning of their whereabouts.

They are now believed to be en route to Missouri and will no doubt be intercepted soon, in which case the Masiens will be brought back to Pagosa Springs to stand trial on a kidnapping charge. The young men are about 20 and 15 years old respectively.

To be found elsewhere in this edition of the SUN is an ordinance being published by the town regarding parking. The ordinance provides for two hour parking only in certain hours on main street and other streets of the town.

The ordinance will be in effect immediately upon publication so motorists should observe the regulation if they desire to avoid traffic fines.

The ordinance was passed last spring but was not made final until signs were available to warn everyone of the restrictions. The measure was adopted in an effort to provide more parking space on the main street as many autos were parked in the same spot for periods as long as a week without being moved. The new law should eliminate all day parking and provide more space for those who come to town to transact business.

Remember the new law will be in effect starting Friday, November 2 and violations may cost up to ten dollars.

Felix Gomez, an Archuleta County resident since 1912, passed away last Saturday at his home in Pagosa Junction. Mr. Gomez was well known throughout the San Juan Basin and his general merchandise store was a point of interest for many visitors to the area.

The police are investigating two car thefts that took place last Friday night. They say that an individual, or individuals, first took a car from near the post office and then abandoned it on Main Street. During this time a small youngster was asleep in the back seat and unaware of what was going on. Another vehicle was then taken from the same general area and was involved in an accident that knocked down a concrete wall at the REA office. The car was damaged. The investigation is continuing.

Ernest Yamaguchi cast the first ballot in Precinct 1 at the general election Tuesday. It was a heavy voting day, with Mr. Yamaguchi voting at 7 a.m. and a steady stream of voters followed from then until 7 p.m. This was true of all polling places in this county.

Overall sales in Archuleta County continued at a record pace through September, apparently not affected by the national economic down turn.

The sales tax collected in the county during September of this year is $498,111, up 9.9 percent over the $453,048 collected during September of 2000.

Many economists regard sales tax collections as a good measure of the condition of the economy because of the taxes are directly linked with retail sales. The belief is that consumers spend more for products when they have confidence in the economy. It is therefore assumed that an increasing amount of sales taxes collected mean that consumers have money and have the confidence to spend it.

County sales tax collections for the year 2001 through September are 13.03 percent ahead of last year for the same span of months. Through September of this  year, $3,782,834 has been collected. Through September of last year $3,346,780 was collected. Last year was a record year for sales tax collections in the county.
