Sheriff Geo. A. Dutton and Harry Macht returned Wednesday from Denver, where they last week shipped the Hollowell cattle by stipulation of the parties concerned in a matter pending in the federal court. A good market was encountered, the stock bringing over $21,000, from which was deducted the expenses of shipment and the Archuleta county taxes, leaving a new sum of about $17,500, which the sheriff has deposited to his account in the Colorado National bank at Denver, pending the disposition of the injunction proceeding in the federal court.
Ray W. Smith, cashier of the Citizens bank, went to Durango yesterday to attend a meeting of the San Juan Bankers’ Association, which met to discuss and formulate plans inaugurating a “service” charge on all small accounts, as is being done in other sections of the state and country. The charge will probably not exceed 50 cents for accounts which average less than $50 per month.

The post office is undergoing a remodeling and face lifting job that will do much to improve the service here. Additional space is also being added and a large loading dock at the rear of the building.
Some time ago the post office department finally woke up to the fact that the present space occupied by the post office was entirely inadequate and called for bids on a larger space. Mr. Petry was low bidder and was informed of this a few weeks ago.
Work was started last week by Don Warr on the remodeling and enlargement and he states that if the necessary building materials are not too hard to get, it will be completed shortly after the first of the month.
More floor space is being added, a new floor, covered with linoleum will be put down, all fixtures will be repaired and painted until such time as new ones are available, and the entire space is to be redecorated with additional lights added.
The Hazelwood Jewelry store will continue to occupy a small space in the front of the building.
There will be no football game here this Friday. The date was originally scheduled with Dove Creek, instead the local team is to go to Tierra Amarilla to play.
The first home game of the season will be Friday, September 28 at the rodeo grounds, Pagosa Springs vs. Ignacio.

If the experience of Pagosa Lodge is any indication, this will be an exceptionally good year for Wolf Creek Ski Area.
According to Lodge Manager Ken Bennett, reservations for 1,437 room nights were booked before September 17th, four times as many as had been received by that date last year. Ski Clubs and skiing families from as far away as Florida are planning to visit Pagosa Lodge this winter.
“Wolf Creek’s growing reputation for having Colorado’s finest powder is the primary reason,” according to Bennett. “And many people to come back once they’ve tried it,” he explained. “Of course, we find that our package rates are attracting some of those who would ordinarily ski at resorts closer to their homes.”
Harry and Marge Lewis arrived in Pagosa Springs last week after hurrying all the way from San Diego, California. What was their hurry? To renew their SUN subscription of course! The Lewis’ are property owners at San Juan River Resort and are making preparations to move to Pagosa Springs next summer.

A Federal Aviation Administration grant amounting to $2.7 million was accepted by the Archuleta County commissioners while meeting in regular session Sept. 11.
Money totaling just over $3 million will be used to fund the continuing upgrade of Stevens Field, according to Tim Smith, the airport manager. Colorado and Archuleta County are donating $152,346 each as a match to the FAA grant. A portion of the county match may take the form of donated labor, equipment, and materials.
The grant was anticipated and money is already included in the county’s 2001 budget. Tuesday’s action is tantamount to depositing the money in the bank. Work on the project should begin next week and be concluded by the end of the year, according to Smith. Nielsons-Skanska of Cortez has the construction contract.
