Lady Pirates win first-ever home dual

Tuesday, Jan. 28, was a historic night for the Pagosa Springs High School Lady Pirate wrestling team.

“Tuesday night was an historic night in Pagosa Wrestling history, as the first ever high school girls dual meet took place,” coach Dan Janowsky wrote in an email to The SUN.

Janowsky explains in his email that girls’ wrestling is still “new” in Colorado, “so filling rosters is a work in progress.”

The Pirates had six wrestlers ready to compete in Tuesday’s dual, while the Montezuma-Cortez Panthers had five wrestlers in their lineup.

There were double forfeits in the 110-pound, 125-pound, 155-pound, 170-pound and 235-pound weight classes.

The Lady Pirates earned 18 team points due to Montezuma-Cortez forfeits in the 135-pound, 140-pound and 190-pound weight classes. The Panthers also earned 18 team points due to Pagosa forfeits, which came in the 115-pound, 120-pound and 145-pound weight classes.

Bella Jackson wrestled in the 110-pound weight class, defeating her opponent by a decision of 15-10, earning three team points.

Madisen Stretton competed at 105 pounds and pinned her opponent in two minutes and 31 seconds.

Kylie Matyniak wrestled at 130 pounds and defeated her opponent by injury default to earn six team points for the Pirates.

Bayfield dual

The Lady Pirates competed in a dual alongside the Pirates boys’ wrestling team in Bayfield on Friday, Jan. 24, winning 42-12.

Janowsky notes that this was the girls’ wrestling program’s first ever dual meet victory.

The Lady Pirates earned 30 team points due to Bayfield forfeits in the 110-pound, 130-pound, 135-pound, 145-pound and 235-pound weight classes.

Bayfield earned all of its 12 team points due to Pagosa forfeits in the 115-pound and 120-pound weight classes.

There were double forfeits in the 190-pound, 170-pound 155-pound and 125-pound weight classes.

Jackson wrestled at 100 pounds, pinning her opponent in 3:05 and earning six team points.

Stretton also pinned her opponent in the 105-pound weight class in 3:01, earning six team points for the Pirates.

The Lady Pirates will finish their regular season this weekend as they travel to Del Norte to compete in the Rio Grande Showdown on Saturday, Feb. 1, with matches set to start at 9 a.m
