“Popular!” Does anyone want to be “popular?” Wouldn’t you like to “hang with the right cohorts who are good at sports”?

Sisters in Song will be helping the Wicked Witch with a makeover as they sing “Popular” at their spring concert tonight, May 10, at 7 p.m. in Pagosa Springs High School auditorium. The Sisters will sing several selections alone and will also perform a combined number with their hosts, the Pagosa Springs Girls Choir (PSGC).

Conceived by PSGC Director Linda Parker, the women’s chorus was created to share the stage with the PSGC on its annual spring concert. The Sisters have been rehearsing since the end of February and are ready to wow Pagosa audiences with their incredible musical talent. The Pagosa community will be amazed at what these ladies have accomplished in just eight short rehearsals.

Titled “On Broadway,” music will include familiar Broadway tunes, including “Popular” from “The Wiz” and “Sunrise, Sunset” from “Fiddler on the Roof.” Several soloists will be featured on the concert, as well: Jeanette and John Hill, Darcy DeGuise, Rachel Hellwege-Vaughan and Mel Smith. The choirs will be accompanied by Gwen Taylor. The concert title and the concert music were selected to complement the summer trip that the members of the girls’ choir will be taking in August to New York City.

“Having a women’s choir provides a great opportunity for the girls to work with a different type of musical group. In the past, we’ve asked soloists and other groups to share the stage on our concerts to give the girls as many varied experiences as possible. Pagosa is full of very talented musicians and I am always grateful that those musicians are willing to give of their time. By working with men and women who continue to enjoy music, even though it isn’t their profession, it shows the girls that music is a lifelong skill,” Parker said. “Through the Sisters, I’ve met many women in Pagosa that are wonderful musicians and I am so humbled that they have joined this group. It is a privilege to work with them, to see their passion for music and to hear their music come to life.”

You won’t need a makeover to enjoy a great evening at the spring concert, “On Broadway,” tonight in the Pagosa Springs High School auditorium. Come as you are and enjoy this evening filled with the music of Broadway. The concert will begin at 7 p.m., so get there early for the best seats. Admission is free, but your donations will be gratefully accepted.
