Sheriff's office issues flood warning, pre-evacuation orders

Staying out of downtown river area encouraged

Update, 4:15 p.m., Monday, Oct. 13: The Pagosa Springs Police Department is requesting the public to use caution when accessing any parks near the river. It maybe necessary to close these areas due to flooding today.

All residence in the area of Hermosa Street and San Juan Street are currently in pre-evacuation status. 
 
Road closures maybe necessary on U.S. 160 at 1st Street and other low-lying areas. 
 
The Ross Aragon Community Center is still being maintained as an emergency shelter.

Update, 4 p.m., Monday, Oct. 13: Piedra Road (County Road 600) is closed at Jack’s Pasture due to flooding.

Water levels are high and still rising in some areas. Please avoid the area and do not try to drive through floodwaters.

Original: The Archuleta County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) Division of Emergency Management  has issued a flood warning for Archuleta County.  

"The rivers are rising and could affect properties and structures," the announcement states. "Be aware of your surroundings  and rock and mud slides. A weather warning indicates a confirmed, curent and present danger to this area. Take necessary safety precautions."

In an interview, Archuleta County Sheriff Mike Le Roux encouraged people to stay out of the area of the San Juan River downtown as much as possible, not going just to view the river, and to stay off the river.

Le Roux explained low-lying areas near rivers and water courses are under pre-evacuation notice, with ACSO personnel door knocking in the affected areas to increase awareness.

Archuleta School District canceled all after-school activities and athletics for today, Monday, Oct. 13.

As of 1 p.m., the San Juan River at Pagosa Springs was flowing at 3,200 cubic feet per second (cfs), up from 1,750 cfs at 8 a.m. By 2 p.m., that figure was 3,760 cfs.

County Road 500 closed

Archuleta County states it is experiencing severe flooding on County Road 500 right now and the road is closed.
 
"Please stay home if you can and avoid the area completely," an update from the county states, adding, "The road is not safe to drive on — water is high and could rise quickly."
 
Emergency crews are working to get it re-opened and are monitoring the situation, but for your safety, the county reminds:
• Don’t drive through floodwaters.
• Stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
• Keep an eye on official alerts and updates.
