The San Juan River has surged beyond its banks and is currently flooding areas of downtown. The river is flowing at an estimated 7,200 cubic feet per second (cfs), with water levels expected to crest around 11 p.m. tonight.

U.S. 160 is closed through downtown at the San Juan River bridge. Both vehicle and pedestrian traffic are prohibited from crossing. Detour routes are in place, and travelers are urged to follow signage and avoid the area.

Evacuation orders in effect

Due to rapidly rising water levels, the following evacuation alerts have been issued:

  • MANDATORY evacuation for residents on Hermosa Street and San Juan Street east of Hot Springs Boulevard.

The Ross Aragon Community Center (451 Hot Springs Blvd.) has been opened as an emergency shelter for displaced residents. All evacuees are encouraged to bring essential items and medications.

Town officials are coordinating with local emergency services and the Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office to potentially declare a state of emergency in response to the flood threat. Further updates will be issued as conditions evolve.
