At San Juan Outdoor Club’s monthly meeting on Thursday, Nov. 5, attending members will be hearing from a world-traveled mountaineer who now teaches young people to sew using recycled materials in Cortez.
In 2013 Phil Henderson became the second Black person to summit Alaska’s Denali, in 2018 led an all-Black ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro and in 2022 managed an expedition that doubled the number of Black climbers to reach the summit of Everest.
Henderson will speak to us about his nonprofit, Full Circle Expeditions, which uses scraps and returned materials from our much-liked Osprey backpack company to make new bags, cross body totes, etc. and how he got to this work from his background with the wilderness school NOLS, as well as his traveling experiences.
Please come out to socialize with your fellow nature lovers and hear an interesting story from a neighbor in nearby Cortez.
The meeting will take place at the Pagosa Lakes Property Owners Association Clubhouse beginning at 6 p.m. with socializing and light snacks; the presentation will start at 6:30 p.m.
