David Maley’s 20-year run as county surveyor is coming to an end, leaving the Board of County Commissioners to appoint a replacement.
Maley submitted his resignation to the BoCC this week, effective Dec. 31.
Maley said his resignation follows a September retirement from Davis Engineering and is, “more of a retirement than a resignation.”
Maley was appointed to the office in 1992, and was subsequently elected and reelected.
“I very much enjoyed my time in Pagosa Springs,” Maley said, noting that he enjoys the place and the people and will be back to visit.
According to state statute, it is the duty of the commissioners, within 90 days of the vacancy, to, “appoint some suitable and qualified person, who need not be a resident of the county, to fill the position of surveyor until the next general election.”
Board chair Clifford Lucero said the first step in filling the position is finding out who is qualified, then obtaining letters of intent from any interested, qualified surveyors.
“I’m sure we’re going to have to advertise,” Lucero said, adding that advertising would likely begin next week, giving the board some time to receive letters and make a decision before Maley’s departure is effective.
