Local fire personnel responded to an agricultural burn that escaped control at approximately 3:31 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4.
According to the Archuleta County Sheriff's Office (ACSO), the Pagosa Fire Protection District (PFPD) and ACSO responded to the grass fire, which was located in the area of Holiday Acres and U.S. 84.
"The cause of the fire was an agricultural burn that escaped control," an ACSO statement explains. "Responding units began suppression immediately. The fire was knocked down and controlled at approximately 4.5 acres, and turned back over to the property owner. There was no damage to any structures."
The statement asks property owners to conduct burning operations responsibly, "particularly with our current conditions."
It notes that all pile burns in Archuleta County require a burn permit, which can be purchased from the PFPD or, if you are in Arboles, Los Pinos Fire District.
It adds that, while legitimate agricultural burns do not require permitting, all property owners conducting such burns are encouraged to call dispatch at (970) 731-2160 to provide situational awareness.
