Film screening to focus on watershed restoration

Posted

Join the San Juan Water Conservancy District (SJWCD) alongside the Chama Peak Land Alliance, Quivira Coalition and the Upper San Juan Watershed Enhancement Partnership on Sept. 9 for a free film screening of the first film of the docuseries “Thinking Like Water.”

This five-part series follows “water wizard” Bill Zeedyk, and his collaborators as they transform degraded watersheds into resilient ecosystems by working with nature.

“Thinking Like Water” chronicles Zeedyk’s transformation from retired U.S. Forest Service employee to an ecological restoration legend.

Zeedyk’s method repairs damaged watersheds by using natural materials to induce a stream’s historical meandering course, which consequently raises the water table and repairs lost habitats. These natural structures are now so well-known and used, especially throughout the southwest, that they have come to be known by their creator’s name: zeedyks.

A panel discussion with local restoration experts will follow the screening, where you can learn more about how to get involved in watershed restoration and enhancement in your own backyard.

The doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the film will start at 6:15 p.m. Please reserve tickets at pagoasmovies.com beforehand to ensure you get a seat.

At the screening you’ll also have an opportunity to get involved in a volunteer event taking place Sept. 13 where you can take what you’ve learned from the film and apply it in a hands-on capacity.

SJWCD Education and Outreach Intern Monica Nigon will be hosting a wet meadow restoration event using Zeedyk’s methods to repair an incised channel on our public lands.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Turkey Springs Trailhead on the Piedra Road entrance.

Email Nigon at mnigon.sjwcd@gmail.com to learn more or sign up to volunteer.
