Colorado’s iconic peaks unite communities for 14er Climb: Summit 2026 honoring America’s 250th and Colorado’s 150th anniversaries

Fifty years after Coloradans climbed the state’s iconic 14,000-foot peaks to celebrate the Centennial State’s 100th birthday, a new generation will carry that legacy forward.

The America 250 - Colorado 150 Commission, in partnership with the Colorado Office of Outdoor Recreation Industry (OREC), recently announced 14er Climb: Summit 2026, a signature initiative honoring Colorado’s 150th anniversary and America’s 250th anniversary.

On Colorado Day, Aug. 1, climbing teams will take to Colorado’s legendary 14ers in a once-in-a-generation celebration of the mountains, landscapes and outdoor experiences that shape our state.

Rooted in the commission’s statewide theme, “The View From Here,” Summit 2026 invites Coloradans to reflect on the places, perspectives and connections that define Colorado — whether from the top of a mountain, a local trail, a neighborhood park or a favorite outdoor space.

“Colorado’s mountains have always represented more than a destination. They represent our shared history, resilience and connection to this place we call home,” said Nathan Richie, co-chair of the America 250 - Colorado 150 Commission. “Through Summit 2026, we are honoring the legacy of those who climbed before us while creating new opportunities for every Coloradan to experience and celebrate their own view of our beautiful state.”

Inspired by the 1976 Centennial 14er Climb, Summit 2026 reimagines the historic effort with a focus on responsible recreation, environmental stewardship, inclusive participation and respect for the tribal nations who have long held connections to these lands.

Experienced team leaders have been identified for each peak, with public spots available through a lottery system to ensure a fair and accessible process for interested climbers. Participants will be matched with teams based on skill level, experience, and peak requirements to support a meaningful experience centered on responsible recreation and managed risk.

Interested climbers can apply to join a Summit 2026 team through Colorado Mountain Club. Register for your specific peak at CMC.org.

“The outdoor spaces we enjoy today come with a responsibility to protect them for future generations,” said Conor Hall, director of the Colorado Outdoor Recreation Industry Office. “Summit 2026 is not just about reaching the top of Colorado’s highest peaks. It is about celebrating our connection to the outdoors, practicing responsible and safe recreation, and ensuring everyone can find their own meaningful connection to Colorado’s natural spaces.”

The initiative is supported through collaboration with several local, state and national outdoor recreation organizations, conservation partners, community groups, and agencies focused on risk management, land stewardship and education.

“The 14er Climb: Summit 2026 is a powerful way to mark two major anniversaries by bringing Coloradans together on the summits we all treasure,” said Ernest House Jr., senior policy director and director, Center for Tribal and Indigenous Engagement at the Keystone Policy Center. “We are proud to help ensure this celebration is grounded in inclusive community engagement and deep respect for the tribal nations who have long called these mountains home.”

The Keystone Policy Center will support tribal engagement throughout the initiative, including collaboration with tribal nations connected to Colorado’s landscapes and support for a sunrise ceremony on or near Mount Blue Sky to begin the historic day.

Find your own 14er

The celebration does not end at the summit. Through the Find Your Own 14er campaign, all Coloradans are invited to participate in the spirit of Summit 2026 by discovering their own outdoor adventure.

Whether it is hiking one of Colorado’s trails, visiting a state park, exploring a scenic byway, fishing, stargazing, birdwatching or simply spending time outside with family and friends, every Coloradan can find a meaningful way to celebrate.

Participants are encouraged to share their outdoor experiences on social media using the hashtag #TheViewFromHere to join the statewide commemoration.

About the America 250 - Colorado 150
Commemoration

The America 250 - Colorado 150 Commission is leading Colorado’s commemoration of 150 years of statehood and 250 years of American independence in 2026.

Established by Gov. Jared Polis and the Colorado General Assembly, the commission brings together leaders from across the state to guide this historic milestone.

Through its campaign, “The View From Here,” the commission invites all Coloradans to reflect on our shared history and imagine the future, recognizing Colorado’s unique legacy as the only state founded on the nation’s 100th birthday in 1876.

Working alongside state agencies, regional Advisory Panel members, and local communities, the commission will showcase signature initiatives, educational programs, exhibits and community-led events to inspire engagement statewide.
