On Tuesday, Aug. 4, the Archuleta County Board of County Commissioners approved writing a letter of support for FireWise to seek grant funding, and also pledge $50,000 of matching funds to the grant — with a condition.

That condition was that, in the end, the county would pay no more than $10,000 toward the grant match, with the remaining $40,000 paid by other entities.

The grant, according to Bill Trimarco, FireWise coordinator for Archuleta County, would be to continue this summer’s slash chipping program by purchasing a chipper for Archuleta County, as well as creating a low-income mitigation program to help residents mitigate their property to better protect against wildfire.
