BoCC discusses options for new judicial center

The Archuleta County Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) held public work sessions to discuss the possibilitity of a new judicial center the afternoons of Jan. 11 and Jan. 12.

It’s worth noting that these were public work sessions, meaning no decisions were made. The options and possibilities presented to the BoCC are just speculation at this point in time.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that the sites discussed at the meeting were not the only sites considered for the judicial center. A diagram of potential sites can be found on page 16 of this issue of the SUN.

Brad Ash, a representative from Reynolds Ash and Associates architecture and design firm, and Bob Johnson, from Reilly Johnson Architecture firm, participated in the work sessions.

The representatives presented a PowerPoint presentation to the BoCC of different options for a new judicial center.

A judicial center would include a detention center, a sheriff’s office, and courts and probation operations.

The options that were presented focused on the possibilities of constructing a new judicial center on Hot Springs Boulevard across from the Community Center and Town Hall, remodeling the current courthouse and purchasing the adjacent land to create a bigger facility, or purchasing the Parelli building and two surrounding parcels in Aspen Village to turn that structure into the new judicial center.
