The Book Fair at Pagosa Springs Elementary School was an outstanding success.
The special theme “Story Laboratory — Reading Gives you Super Power!” provided lots of excitement and energy for the students.
More than 385 students and their family members attended the Family Night. The fun and exhilaration for the evening was provided by Ms. Mad Scientist, wearing laboratory coat and safety goggles, who performed a variety of science experiments to crowds of ooohs and aahs. The 50-minute show produced smoke, steam, funky noises, foaming product, colored concoctions and interesting equipment by a trained scientist who explained every fascinating experiment so the youngsters would understand.
Dinner was served to over 325 people and the Book Fair was open. The Partners in Education Committee (P.I.E.) organized the evening. Teachers volunteered for the various setup, cleanup and staffing duties during the evening. Students from the leadership teams greeted families at the front door and provided directional assistance. Additionally, 60 students with their family members from the English Language Learners (ELL) program attended a special Bingo event hosted by Bobbie Lassman, ELL instructor.
Gross sales were $8,689.73, which will translate into approximately $2,011 of cash profit for the school. Additionally, the school library received $455 worth of new books and $801 of scholastic book credit. Proceeds from this book fair will be used to build and replace chapter book collections for classroom libraries and to purchase a portable stage.
