The 27th annual Knights of Columbus Lenten Fish Fry is underway, with the event starting on Feb. 24.

The fry takes place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. every Friday evening through March 31.

The meal of two fried fish filets, french fries and coleslaw is available for takeout only from John Paul II Catholic Church, 353 S. Pagosa Blvd. The cost is $15.

According to an article by the Knights of Columbus Council 7560, the Lenten Fish Fry began around 1996. The grand knight at the time was Seth Crain, who started the fish fry as a fundraiser for the council along with Pete Dach and many other Knights who have moved or passed on.

Over the years, as the event grew in popularity, the group moved from two turkey fryer-type propane units and eventually constructed a large fry wagon to meet demand.
