Town sanitation district discusses charging dormant fee

Posted

People who own vacant property within the Pagosa Springs Sanitation and General Improvement District (PSSGID) have traditionally paid the flat rate of $37.50 per month, even if no one was living on the property or using the sewer system.

At its Tuesday night meeting, however, the district’s board directed its staff to look into changing that.

The issue arose recently when former town council member Darrel Cotton spoke up during the public comment section of the March 19 PSSGID meeting.

“We’ve talked about this before,” Cotton explained. “With our sewer bill, we pay $37.50 per month for our unoccupied — and unoccupiable — home. I think that number is obscene when the sewer is in use, and really not nice when you’re not using it at all.”
