Town Manager Greg Schulte, who also acts as staff for the sanitation district, began by explaining that, as it stands now, the rules and regulations for the district do not allow the accounts of residential customers to go into a dormant status. If a house is connected to the sewer collection system, the property owner must pay the same monthly fee as everyone else.
Certain commercial accounts, such as RV parks, are allowed to go dormant during the winter, but those owners must provide a guarantee that the sewer system will not be used at all while the business is closed.
Several members of the public, including former town councilor Darrel Cotton, have approached the town and asked that a similar allowance be made for residential properties that have been, or will be, vacant for a long period of time.
