Severe thunderstorm on its way

The National Weather Service has issued a significant weather advisory for western Archuleta County warning of a strong thunderstorm moving into the area.

The weather advisory notes that nickel-size hail and wind gusts up to 50 mph will be possible with this storm.

Too, Thad McKain, Archuleta County's director of emergency management, said a flood warning is being issued for the southern half of the county.

According to the weather advisory, doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 15 miles northeast of Navajo Lake State Park, with the storm moving northeast at 20 mph.

McKain said the storm was expected to hit the Arboles area around 2 p.m. today (Thursday).

McKain encouraged anyone noticing flood-related issues to alert Archuleta County Combined Dispatch by calling 731-2160. The Red Cross remains on standby in case it is needed.
