Glass is now among the items accepted at the Gene Crabtree Recycling Center, located at the Transfer Station on County Road 500.
While glass is not collected by regional recycling processing facilities, Archuleta County intends to stockpile the material for use in building future cells at the landfill.
“To me, it was a win-win situation,” said David Sterner, Solid Waste Department director.
Sterner said Solid Waste Department staff will use existing equipment to turn the bottles into aggregate, which will be stockpiled until construction of a new landfill cell is needed years in the future.
At that point in time, the stockpiled aggregate will be used in a leach field for the new cell to divert leachate and reduce liquid pressure, aiding in the decomposition of materials.
Sterner said glass collected by the transfer station must be in the form of glass bottles (no window glass), and has to be clean.
In addition to glass, the following materials are accepted at the recycling center:
• Aluminum food and beverage containers.
• Ferrous (iron) cans.
• PET plastic containers with the symbol #1 (narrow-neck containers only).
• DPE natural plastic containers with the symbol #2 (narrow-neck containers only, such as detergent, shampoo, bleach bottles, etc. —without the caps).
• Newsprint.
• Old corrugated cardboard.
• Magazines.
• Catalogs.
• Printer paper.
• Copier paper.
• Mail.
