A page went out to Pagosa Fire Protection District personnel at 12:07 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, reporting a motor home on fire near mile marker 156, east of Pagosa Springs and just east of the Archuleta/Mineral county line, said PFPD Assistant Chief Brian Leewitt.
By the time firefighters arrived on scene, Leewitt said all of the occupants were out of the vehicle and about 30 percent of the motor home was engulfed in flames.
Emergency crews immediately closed U.S. 160 in both directions, with the road opened to one lane of traffic at about 2 p.m., Leewitt explained.
Leewitt said the motor home fire also caused a small fire off the side of the road, with that fire quickly suppressed and held to about one-quarter acre in size.
Fire personnel cleared the scene just before 2:45 p.m.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, the assistant chief said, but added that some of the belongings from the motor home were saved.
