Local unemployment rate down in May

The Fourth of July is just around the corner, this year’s late spring moisture has turned Pagosa Country into a verdant green paradise, and as the bustling crowds of tourists bring an air of vibrancy to the community, the county’s economic indicators continue to paint a rosy picture.

According to a report issued earlier this week by the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment (CDLE), the unemployment rate fell to 4.5 percent in May and there were 5,962 people in the Archuleta County labor force. Of those, 5,695 had jobs while only 267 were unemployed.

In the previous month, 5,400 people had jobs and 279 did not, making the unemployment rate 4.9 percent. Over the year, the county’s unemployment rate fell from 5.8 percent and the labor force increased by 232 people.

Looking at the employment situation for the rest of the state, Phillips County had the lowest unemployment rate for the month with 2.4 percent, while Huerfano and San Miguel counties tied for the highest with 7.7 percent.
