After two straight wins, the Pagosa Springs High School Lady Pirate soccer team dropped last weekend’s game against Montezuma-Cortez and moved to 4-5 on the season.
The Lady Pirates now sit as the No. 30 team in Colorado 3A girls’ soccer.
The Lady Pirates traveled to Cortez on Saturday, April 18, for their second matchup of the season with the now-No. 9 Montezuma-Cortez Panthers.
Pagosa lost the game 6-0, but coach Trevor Gian indicated he is proud of the team for fighting all the way through the game.
“I’m very proud of our team, and our heart and our effort were there,” said Gian. “We fought. I mean, they’re a tough team.”
The Lady Pirates went into the game knowing that it was going to be a difficult game and that they would spend a lot of time defending their own half, noted Gian.
The Lady Pirates gave up two goals in the first half and four more in the second half.
Because the girls were defending in their own half for much of the game, the chances for scoring were few and far between, noted Gian.
Toward the end of the game, Gian explained he tried to get the Lady Pirates to open the field a bit more and attack, but the Panthers were able to hold the Lady Pirates scoreless for all 80 minutes.
“We’re proud of the girls and how we went and met a tough challenge,” Gian said. “They’re going to finish top 10, top five probably, in the state at least when the season’s over, and it’s good to know we can play with teams like that.”
The Lady Pirates have four games coming up in the next two weeks against opponents they have already faced this year.
This Thursday, April 23, the Lady Pirates were supposed to host Ignacio, a team they beat 10-0 previously this season, but the game was canceled, with Gian indicating Ignacio won’t have enough players.
The Lady Pirates will travel to Alamosa on Friday, April 24, for a rematch with the No. 20 Mean Moose, who are 5-4 on the season. The Lady Pirates previously lost to Alamosa 2-1 in the beginning of April.
“We know they’re a quality team,” Gian said of Alamosa. “We’ve seen them the last few years win the division or the league. You know, we really want to try to get some kind of positive result there.”
On Tuesday, the Lady Pirates will host the Bayfield Wolverines, who they defeated 6-1 in Bayfield on April 14. The Wolverines are now 2-8 on the season and sit as the No. 44 team in 3A.
With only four to five more practices left this season, Gian indicated he really wants the team to hone in on possession, taking quicker and less touches and finishing as the season comes to a close.
