Hunger Free Colorado offers the SNAP program

SUN Columnist

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) offers nutrition assistance to millions of eligible, low-income individuals and families and provides economic benefits to communities.

SNAP is the largest program in the domestic hunger safety net.  The Food and Nutrition Service works with state agencies, nutrition educators, and neighborhood and faith-based organizations to ensure that those eligible for nutrition assistance can make informed decisions about applying for the program and can access benefits.

What is Hunger Free Colorado doing? Hunger Free Colorado was launched in 2009 to ensure that every Coloradan has access to adequate, nutritious food. They work to make SNAP more streamlined and accessible through their Hunger Free Hotline, as well as by providing training, tools and support to community partners through their SNAP Outreach initiative.

SNAP is underused, therefore unused dollars are being lost.

Find out if you qualify for assistance at a SNAP and Hunger Free Colorado presentation at The Den on Wednesday, July 17, at 12:30 p.m..

Driver safety class

An AARP Driver Safety Class will be held at the Senior Center Thursday, July 18, 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Registration is required.

Costs: AARP members $12, non-members $14.

For further information, and to register, call Lois O’Dell at 259-5589.

 Senior Law Day

An annual educational seminar will be held in Denver presenting a multitude of programs specifically designed for seniors in the Colorado community.

If you are a senior, an adult child with an aging parent or a caregiver, this is one day you cannot afford to miss — Saturday, July 27, at the Denver Mart. Admission is an optional contribution of $10 which includes a free copy of the 2013 edition of Senior Law Handbook (a fabulous handbook, I might add).

The following is a sampling of the many workshops available:

• Adult protection and elder abuse.

• Consumer and investment fraud prevention.

• Living wills, advance medical directives, DNR order, proxies, and end of life issues.

• Estate planning: wills, trust and your property.

• Social Security.

• Aging in place — maintaining your independence at home.

• Bankruptcy.

• Planning for your pets.

• LGBT domestic relationships and civil unions.

• Lifelong learning and the Aging brain.

• Hanging up the car keys for good.

• What to do when someone dies.
