How do we hear from God?

Posted

How do we hear from God? It’s pretty simple: Listen.

Are people seeking God today? Are they hearing His voice? It’s hard in all the deafening noise of the world to tune into the voice from heaven. We are in a season that doesn’t make sense, and our minds are spinning out of control and we wonder what on earth is happening and if God hears us.

We have entered a new season that has muffled out the predictable sweet summer life we once enjoyed. Just like in nature. Yellow is topping our trees, temperatures are coming down, the fun summer activities have come to a close, and fall is about to burst forth in wild colors.

In a couple of weeks my family will drive to Opal Lake and admire the aspen trees. The brilliant yellow leaves catch the sun and I stare in awe. I’ve said many times I want to be like one of those aspen leaves quivering in the quiet breeze. I want to shiver in God’s presence when He passes by, to be so sensitive that when He speaks, I feel His breath on my face.

A fellow writer wrote an article a few months ago titled “Find out if God likes you.” The way things look, we could easily think God doesn’t really like us. Lying in the hospital bed, I found God loves me. His presence was strong. I felt such peace as I lay there mangled by a recent accident, which could have easily taken My Sweet Al and me home.

God only allowed what was necessary to get my attention. Nothing was broken that can’t be fixed, and I’m so much better off spiritually for going through this situation. I know, it sounds crazy. I’d do it again for that gentle touch from God. He is not to be feared, but loved. We can trust Him in all the chaos and violence of this new season.

We hear about these last days and many feel we are in them. What does that mean? Well, I know “hell’s a poppin’.” We are sensing evil as we’ve never known. It’s as if the devil has been unleashed into this world sevenfold. As I read the scriptures, the signs are pointing to the “day of the God, the last days.” How do we live in the light in the end?

It’s pretty simple: Keep our eyes on Jesus, the light of the world. That light that lights man’s heart. Be like that shivering golden aspen leaf catching the light. We are fragile, but God is holding us to the branch. He has measured pain, counted tears, and we can trust Him.

God uses multilayered expressions to show His presence — the wind, His breath, His voice and His Spirit. He moves in mysterious ways to let us know He is here. Listen for Him.

When we feel a touch of the wind and hear its sound in a minor key, He’s talking to us. His presence is nearer than we think. He tells us that the kingdom of God is within us. We sense Him in our hearts and know He is real. He is sovereign and absolute.

Do I see Him sovereign? Yes, I do. Then why do I worry? Do I believe he possesses supreme political power? Yes, I do. I know from scriptures He places kings on thrones and takes them off.

This is the season we are in. There will be a reason for the outcome. His reason. His thinking is so much higher than ours. Can I trust Him in the darkness of this world? Yes, I can, but I must draw closer to the light, like a moth to the flame. There is no darkness in Him, no shadow in His turning. He is the father of lights.

“It’s impossible to disappear from Him (God) or to ask the darkness to hide me, for your presence is everywhere, bringing light into my night. There is no such thing as darkness with you. The night, to you, is as bright as the day; there’s no difference between the two.” — Psalm 139:11,12 (TPT).

I read in a footnote of The Passion Translation in 2 Peter, “The Bible is the only book whose Author is present every time it is read. The Holy One is the Divine Author of Scripture and is the one who can open our hearts to understanding truth.”

The Bible tells us, “Actually, God considers all of humanity to be prisoners of their unbelief, so that he can unlock our hearts and show his tender mercies to all who come to him” (Romans 11:32, TPT).

We can trust Him. He wants us to know Him. Does God like us? Yes, He does. He sees us trapped. He wants to deliver us from ourselves. He wants to show us His tender mercies and unlock our hearts.

Final brushstroke: We must listen and hear before we can answer. The Lord is waiting for us to answer Him. He knows every leaf on every tree. He sees our vulnerability as we go in this next season of this crazy world in which we live. He’s holding us to the branch.
