Special to The PREVIEW
The Pagosa Springs-based High Country Squares had a great time at their Halloween-themed dance with some very creative costumes and tasty treats, and are looking forward to the student graduation dance on the night of Nov. 18.
The growing square dance club, under the expert tutelage of caller Jim Park, is proud to graduate its newest students after a season of intensive training to learn 60 or so Basic and Mainstream dance calls. Congratulations to these beginning dancers for regularly showing up to class and mastering all of these steps.
As you can imagine, square dancing involves a lot of memory recall. It is a great mental workout as well as an entertaining and challenging pastime.
The masterful club caller, Jim Park, maintains balance between teaching the newer dancers and challenging the more experienced ones. There is always something new to learn.
The High Country Squares formed in May of 2008, comprising couples and singles that love to dance. The club offers seasonal weekly lessons, regional dances and a wonderful sense of community for local and visiting dancers. A side benefit of square dancing is that once you learn the steps, you can travel all over the world and dance in clubs whose members have learned those steps.
The fall schedule for club dancing is Plus, with some Mainstream tips depending on the floor, from 7:30-9:15 p.m. every Monday night at the PLPOA Clubhouse located at 230 Port Ave.
