Fuel prices

Dear Editor:

The average price of a gallon of diesel fuel in the United States continues to set records.

President Trump has been repeatedly saying that sky-rocketing diesel prices are the result of Ukraine striking Russia’s refineries.

“This isn’t done by the Middle East, this is done by what’s happening with Russia and Ukraine.” [Trump said at his golf course in Doonbeg, Ireland on September 13]

Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refineries are not the primary driver of global fuel price crises.

Primary factors: International fuel inflation, broader macroeconomic factors, including Middle East conflicts and a worldwide shortage in refining capacity.

According to Serhii Kuyun of the A-95 Consulting Group, Ukrainian strikes are estimated to have reduced global supplies of Russian oil and petroleum products by about 1 to 1.5 million barrels per day. Meanwhile, the crisis surrounding Iran has disrupted 10 to 12 million barrels per day.
