Three years ago, Amazing Grace Community Church, based in Aspen Springs, saw a need in the community to support food security. As a solution, they created the Aspen Springs Food Pantry.

The food pantry sees as many as 200 people a month coming through for help. Those who come are not only from Aspen Springs, but the pantry services people from downtown Pagosa, all the way to U.S. 84.

The food pantry provides all kinds of food and is the only pantry in the area that delivers to those who cannot make the trip, or struggle with asking for help.

Food for the pantry is donated from a wide array of sources, including Loaves and Fishes, Care and Share, other local food pantries that are overstocked and individuals who donate food or money. In addition, the pantry receives an annual grant from the Salvation Army and Catholic charities.

Pastor Mark Disbrow of Amazing Grace said that food security is a major issue in Aspen Springs. He said that while some people may have food stamps, if they are unable to afford a car, or enough gas to drive the significant distance into town, they won’t make it to the store to use the stamps.
