An electrical fire at Pagosa Springs Medical Center has caused hospital staff to evacuate emergency room patients this morning.
According to PSMC's chief administrative officer, Ann Bruzzese, a light fixture in front of the cafe caught fire. Staff noticed and put the fire out with a fire extinguisher, but smoke remained.
Bruzzese explained that a horizontal evacuation has taken place, with the ER patients moved outside, where they are being treated. Additional staff has been called in and the hospital's emergency response team was activated to help care for the patients.
Anyone needing emergency medical care will either be treated outside or diverted to Mercy Regional Medical Center until they get the all-clear signal, Bruzzese said.
Two Pagosa Fire Protection District trucks are on scene and firefighters are going through the ceiling to ensure there are no remaining flames, she said. Upper Pine Fire Protection District has been put on notice to help in the event of additional incidents within the PFPD.
