Special to The SUN
Fourteen students participated in the annual Pagosa Springs Elementary School chess tournament on Friday, May 9.
Everyone involved played well and received a certificate for their efforts. They also received a chess set donated by Greg McCarty to encourage them to continue to play and improve their game.
Three students ended the day with an equal number of wins. They advanced to the playoff held Tuesday, May 13.
The final results had Zane Edwards taking first place, Jonathen Matney winning second and Casey Beck placing third. These young men received trophies donated by Joanne Irons and family.
Greg McCarty acted as tournament director and was assisted by other members of our local chess club including Anthony Steventon, Mike Halverson and Steve Koneman. Shoni Matney and Jack Constant also assisted with the tournament.
