The Region 9 Economic Development District of Southwest Colorado and Southwest Colorado Council of Governments (known collectively as Region 9 EDD) announced that it will receive just under $1 million to purchase and install broadband equipment in five data centers in Southwest Colorado.
The data centers (also called carrier neutral locations, or CNLs) are in Pagosa Springs, Bayfield, Durango, Mancos and Cortez, and the equipment will allow connect the CNLs into a statewide fiber loop called the Alpine Loop.
Five governments (Mancos, La Plata, Archuleta, Montezuma and the Southwest Colorado Council of Governments) are providing cash match, along with Region 9 EDD, for this project, which, when complete, will result in a continuous, self-mending loop around the state.
“This equipment, including transmitters and routers, is crucial to ensure reliable connections, as the Loop is specifically designed to reroute information in the case of a broken connection anywhere on our regional fiber highway,” said Shak Powers, Region 9 EDD regional projects manager. “This technology will support emergency communications, enhance tourism experiences and provide local residents with essential connectivity for work and daily life.”
