Special to The PREVIEW
The museum at the Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will celebrate the opening reception of “One Bead at a Time: The Artistry of Orlando Dugi and Ken Williams” on Saturday, June 21, from 1-4 p.m. Admission and parking are free. This event is open to the public.
“One Bead at a Time” features the work of two contemporary Santa Fe artists, focusing on beadwork and fashion design. Dugi (Navajo) designs and makes hand-beaded eveningwear and accessories. He works by stitching one bead at a time, working with fine silks, leathers, feathers and metals. One of his gowns recently appeared in Vogue Italia.
Williams (Arapaho/ Seneca) blends his modern style of beadwork with his traditional upbringing. His primary focus is fancy bags — handbags, shoulder pouches, pipe bags and delicate pictorial purses. Williams recently won 2014 Best of Show at the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair and Market.
The Center of Southwest Studies is celebrating its 50th year in 2014. The center provides an active program of public lectures and events throughout the year at its museum, research library and archives facility in Durango, at the north end of the Fort Lewis College campus.
