Tuesday, March 4 is the date chosen for the political caucus process in Colorado.
Precinct caucuses are meetings of registered electors within a precinct who are members of a particular major political party. The purpose of precinct caucuses is to elect precinct committee persons and delegates to county assemblies.
Caucuses are held in locations across Colorado and are open to the public. The Archuleta County Democratic Party will hold its precinct caucuses in the senior dining room of the Ross Aragon Community Center starting at 6:30 p.m. This is a departure from the last several caucus processes where the eight precincts met in different locations.
Caucus attendees are being asked to come at 6:30 p.m. in order that the caucuses can start promptly at 7 p.m. In order to participate in a caucus, a person must be a resident of a county precinct for at least 30 days, registered to vote not later than 29 days before the caucus, and affiliated with the party holding the caucus for at least two months before the caucus.
Please consider offering to serve as a precinct co-chair for the county party. This job involves organizing precinct activities in connection with the upcoming election.
Or, you can offer to be a delegate to the county assembly where county officers are chosen; delegates to the state assembly and district assemblies are also chosen. Consider also volunteering to serve as an election judge for either the primary or general election.
Another important component of the caucus is an opportunity to offer ideas for your party’s platform. This is a true grass-roots effort to shape the direction in which a political party is heading. If you do or don’t like what is happening on the political stage, perhaps this is your chance to change that direction.
