Spooky thrills on the way: PPOS to host third annual Haunted House

Get ready for a night of spine-tingling fun as Pagosa Peak Open School (PPOS) prepares to open its doors for the third annual Haunted House.

This one-of-a-kind local tradition — the only haunted house event in Archuleta County — promises a memorable Halloween experience for the whole community.

This year, 17 ambitious and creative PPOS middle schoolers selected the Haunted House elective to bring this event to life.

Under the guidance of PPOS Drama Club teacher Alison Beach and Pagosa Springs Center for the Arts owner Laura Moore, these talented students have spent weeks designing, constructing and polishing an immersive installation inside the school.

“The process has been fun,” said eighth-grader Rayleen. “You get to make art with friends and have a big final product at the end set around an overall theme.”

“I’m learning a lot about paper mache,” said eight-grader Finlay. “And I’m excited to be putting all the pieces together and improving on our last time we created the haunted house.”

The students have not only learned about how to apply their creativity, they also learned business concepts such as marketing.

“When marketing, it’s important to keep things interesting and capture your audience’s attention,” eighth-grader Quinn said.

Designed specifically with kids ages 5-11 in mind, the tour is tailored to be fun, exciting and family-friendly. Student guides will lead brave visitors through interactive scenes featuring student actors, creative set designs, and plenty of festive surprises along the way.

The fun begins before you even step inside. While waiting in line, families can enjoy an array of autumn activities, including roasting s’mores and having their futures told by student fortune tellers.

The public is welcome to purchase tickets and join in the fun on Oct. 23 and Oct. 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. each night.

Come out, support our creative middle school students, and celebrate the spooky season with us. We can’t wait to see you there.
