Four candidate petitions have been verified and approved for the November Archuleta School District (ASD) Board of Education elections.
The candidates include Jason Peterson for District 2, Greg Schick, who is running for re-election in District 3, and two candidates for District 4, Lisl Keuning and Bill Hudson.
Joanne Irons, who currently serves District 2, and District 4’s Ken Fox are unable to run for re-election due to term limits.
The SUN previously ran information about and views from Hudson and Keuning, and this week is for Schick and Peterson.
Schick grew up in Pagosa Springs and attended all 12 years of school in the local school system. He attended Colorado State University for both his bachelor’s and doctor of veterinary medicine degrees. He practiced in Gunnison for 25 years before returning to Pagosa Springs for the past 12 years.
Schick said he is running for re-election because he understands the value of public education and has a passion for providing great education to all students. He also has a wealth of experience, having served six years on the board, and a track record that he hopes will add to the continuity of the work that has already been done, and has yet to occur.
Peterson is running for the school board because he believes Pagosa kids need to have the skills and abilities to be competitive in a rapidly changing world.
“I’m running because our children’s future starts in the classroom and it’s important that we prepare them for the challenges and opportunities they will face in the world,” he wrote in an email to The SUN.
Peterson hopes to improve communication and listen to feedback from key stakeholders to make decisions that are in the best interest of students.
“As someone new to the board, I have a lot to learn, however, one of my goals will be improving the communication and feedback the board receives from students, teachers and the community.”
Peterson believes the biggest challenge the district faces is prioritizing resources.
