Jim Miller and Tye Davidson from the Pagosa Springs Parks and Recreation Department used the “hand-boni” in an attempt to prepare the River Center Pond for ice skaters on Christmas Eve. Miller reported that many inquiries had been made by interested tourists and locals alike, and he assured SUN staff that the ice would be thick and smooth enough for skaters by Christmas Day. He also reported that Davidson had trapped and relocated a family of beavers that had taken up residence at the pond, including one they nicknamed “Justin Beaver.”[/caption]

Through a partnership with local instructors Lindsey Kurt-Mason and Katie Vincent, the Town of Pagosa Springs Recreation Department is offering an introductory gymnastics program for youths in grades 1-4.

Kurt-Mason and Vincent are former competitive gymnasts and will teach basic tumbling, vaulting, balance beam, rings, pommel horse and fitness activities in a fun and safe environment. Classes, which will be limited to eight students per age group, begin Jan. 8 and will run through Feb. 12.

Classes will be held in the elementary school gym Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 p.m.-4:50 p.m. for participants in grades 1-2. Participants in grades 3-4 will practice the same evenings from 5-5:50 p.m.

Registration begins tomorrow and will run through Jan. 7; due to the specialized nature of the program, registration cost is $77. Registrations will be available at the recreation office in Town Hall and will also be posted in Adobe format on the recreation department page at www.townofpagosasprings.com.

For more information call 264-4151, Ext. 231 or 232.

Youth basketball

Registration for the upcoming 9- and 10-year-old and 11- and 12-year-old youth basketball leagues has closed and assessment dates will be announced after the first of the year (the assessments will not take place until the second week of January).

Late registrations will be accepted, but late registrants will now be placed on a waiting list and be placed on teams only if participants who registered before the deadline opt out of the program.

For more information call 264-4151, Ext. 231 or 232.

Youth programs

The Town of Pagosa Springs is in the process of evaluating the feasibility of new summer programming, clinics and workshops for local youths.

Through an ongoing partnership between the town recreation department and Ross Aragon Community Center, staff hopes to identify new possibilities for low-cost sports programming, outdoor education and arts-related endeavors. The desire is to create an introductory curriculum for next summer and implement as many new programs as the town budget allows.

The tentative plan is to utilize volunteers for as many programs as possible, but there may also be opportunities for the use of talented, specialized instructors on a part-time, compensated basis. The goal is to provide fun, educational programs for youths ages 4-10 at a reasonable cost.

Anyone interested in submitting a programming idea can contact the town recreation office at 264-4151, Ext. 232, or Cheryl Bowdridge, community center director, at 264-4152.

Photos

Coaches and parents who ordered youth soccer and volleyball photos can contact Jeff Laydon at Pagosa Photography, 264-3686, to arrange pick up of their orders. The recreation office will provide sponsors with team plaques and pictures as soon as they are available.

The recreation staff would also like to thank Mr. Laydon for accommodating another busy schedule during this year’s programs.

This year marks the 17th year Jeff has offered professional photography service to our programs while donating all of the team photographs used in the commemorative plaques free of charge; thanks again.
