Coming off their bye week, the Pagosa Springs High School Pirate football team will be traveling to Aspen on Friday, Oct. 9, to take on the Aspen Skiers at 7 p.m.
The Pirates enter the matchup as the No. 16-ranked team in the state’s 2A division, just a few spots behind the No. 13-ranked Skiers.
Pagosa has an even .500 record through their first six games of the season, sitting at 3-3, which includes a league record of 2-1. The Pirates are in fourth place in the Western Slope League.
Aspen has an overall record of 4-2, including a league mark of 2-1, and sit in third place of the Western Slope League.
The Delta Panthers have remained undefeated on the season and are in first place of the Western Slope League, followed by the Basalt Longhorns in second place with a 2-1 league record.
The Pirates have three games remaining in the regular season, all against league opponents, including their matchup against Aspen on Friday.
The following week, the Pirates will host their final home game of the regular season on Friday, Oct. 16, as they take on the Gunnison Cowboys at 7 p.m. at Golden Peaks Stadium.
The Pirates will then travel to New Castle to take on the Coal Ridge Titans on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m.
Coach Nathan Morales explained that the Pirates are “ready to get on the bus and go” for their matchup against Aspen, noting the team is in for a seven-hour bus trip.
He commented that Pagosa is used to long travel days, as that is the nature of living in rural Southwest Colorado.
Morales explained the Pirates have had a busy week of practice and he is looking for the team to “execute well” on all sides of the ball and “take care of business” against Aspen.
With the Pirates currently sitting in the last state playoff spot, Morales mentioned the Pirates just need to “keep playing our football,” getting better each day and working hard in order to make a strong push for the postseason.
