Monthly sales tax collections down for second consecutive month

According to data released by Archuleta County Finance Director Chad Eaton on Oct. 7, sales tax collections in Archuleta County for August were reported to be down 2.85 percent compared to figures from August 2025.

Eaton’s report notes that the 2.85 percent decrease translates to a total of $47,627.53 less received this August compared to August 2025.

For this August, Eaton notes that the Town of Pagosa Springs and Archuleta County received a total of $1,625,262.15 from the sales tax and retail marijuana sales tax, with $811,212.79 going to the county and $810,913.24 going to the town.

January saw a decrease of 10.64 percent ($149,587.01) in sales tax collections, while numbers for February reflected a 1.17 percent increase ($16,020.75). March figures reflected a 1.01 ($15,560.32) percent decrease, and numbers for April reflected a 9.07 percent decrease ($125,110.70). May figures showed a decrease of .48 percent ($6,553.63). June figures showed a 1.63 ($28,804) percent increase, and July figures showed a 1.12 ($21,331.76) decrease.

According to data in Eaton’s press release, the year-to-date comparison for January through August of this year shows a 2.83 percent decrease, or $288,018.12 less received compared to figures from January through August 2025.

Eaton’s report notes that a total of $12,179,634.43 in sales tax has been collected so far this year.

Categories that were up in the month-to-month comparison, according to Eaton’s data, include:

• Retail Trade at 5.44 percent, or $47,497.78.

• Finance and Insurance at 63.86 percent, or $1,618.46.

• Real Estate, Rental and Leasing at 37.25 percent, or $11,535.19.

Categories that were down in the month-to-month comparison include:

• Construction at 39.6 percent, or $11,846.01.

• Manufacturing at 13.36 percent, or $10,720.41.

• Information at 6.73 percent, or $1,818.41.

• Professional, Scientific and Technical Services at 15.34 percent, or $2,387.75.

• Accommodation and Food Services at 18.86 percent, or $71,305.19.

• Other Services (except Public Administration) at 28.76 percent, or $8,673.65.

• Miscellaneous at .75 percent, or $1,527.54.
