Visitors to the 74th Archuleta County Fair July 31 through Aug. 3 are likely to see the Royalty Court, three remarkable young women selected to represent our community at this year’s fair: Queen Olivia Mazur, Princess Sophia Ellis and Junior Princess Nora Forrest.

These dedicated ladies are not only proud to wear their crowns, but they also embody the spirit of Archuleta County. Attending local schools, actively participating in 4-H, each of these young leaders is committed to giving back to our community. Their enthusiasm and passion for service make them exceptional role models for all of us.

Mazur has varied interests ranging from wrangling horses to serving as an accompanist at her church. She taught piano and dance lessons as she enjoys sharing her skills with others. Mazur will be attending college in the fall to pursue her dream of becoming an equine veterinarian. She also plans to continue focusing on her love for music. She is excited for the future and the opportunities ahead.

Ellis loves to write and enjoys public speaking. She spent time on the stage and was a competitive dancer. Her favorite school classes are English and science (in particular anatomy) and she would like to be a surgeon in the future. She has been a teacher’s assistant at school. Ellis enjoys traveling and time with family.

Forrest has been raising chickens and this year is raising turkeys for the 4-H program. Her favorite part of raising poultry is having them chase and follow her around. Her interests are riding horses and playing basketball.

Super Superintendent, Super Volunteer named

Volunteers are critical to the operation of fair, and we appreciate each one of them. They handle everything from setting up the fairgrounds, serving on the board, coordinating entertainment, overseeing games and more.

Two special volunteers, Super Superintendent Lisa Vail and Super Volunteer Ashley Torres, were selected for their outstanding service to the fair over the past several years.

Vail served on the fair’s Board of Directors for several years and during that time also served as the Exhibit Hall coordinator. Since leaving the board, she has continued to help set up and organize the Exhibit Hall, assisted with registering exhibits received for display, and provided directions to new fair team members.

Torres is a creative powerhouse who actively helps wherever she has been asked, from updating signs advertising the fair to assisting with the Tough Enough Pink Rodeo event.

We also remember folks who have recently passed away but who offered vital support to the fair and 4-H programs over the years. They had an impact on the fair, on the 4-H family, and on the people with whom they worked and served. We honor their memory.
