Pagosa Springs and Archuleta county are this year experiencing the novelty of a Christmas with no snow but rather considerable dust. Santa Claus and his reindeer are finding “poor sledding” this year.

Doll Pargin drove over from his Piedra ranch this morning in his new Buick Master-Six sedan. Mr. Pargin has just returned from Denver where he marketed 4 carloads of fat cows and yearling heifers on last Wednesday.

The Pargin heifers topped the Denver market for this season, selling for $7.75 each and averaging 781 pounds. Their cows were very large and in excellent shape. They averaged 1126 pounds, some weight for cows. The cows brought $6.75.

Pargin Brothers have a reputation for raising fine cattle and the shipment last week was said to be the finest bunch of grass fed stock that has been on the Denver market for years. The entire shipment was bought by Swift and Company for their Christmas trade.

This afternoon Mr. Pargin went to the Fort Lewis school to take his two sons, who are attending that institution, home for the holidays.

Private Joe Gallegos, son of Mrs. Sarah Gallegos of Pagosa Springs was home on a five day furlough during Christmas.

Paul Day, now in San Francisco, called his parents Christmas Eve. He said he had eaten Xmas dinner with friends and spent a pleasant afternoon in their home. He said he would not get to come home now. Mrs. Day said this call from their son was the best present they received.

County Clerk and Recorder Phillip R. Johnson announced this week that the 1951 auto licenses will go on sale January 15 at his office. The license plates for next year will be green background with white numerals.

Mr. Johnson stated that those who have had the same number for the past years may again obtain it by applying before February 1st. No number will be saved after that date.

He also pointed out that the work of selling the licenses could be handled with considerable more efficiency if each auto owner will have his auto registration card and driver’s license with him at the time he makes application for new plates. These two forms are necessary if a license is to be issued.

It is a white Christmas in the area this year. Snow fell last Sunday and again on Tuesday of this week. The SUN is being printed a day early and indications are that there may be a storm in the area over the holidays. The weather is comparatively mild and the countryside is beautiful.

Wolf Creek Ski Area will be operating every day during the holidays. Skiing is excellent with over four feet of snow depth. All lifts are running and Wolf Creek is a popular place this year for skiers. Other ski areas in Colorado, except for Purgatory are hurting for snow.

More than 200 children showed up last Saturday afternoon at the Mesa Theatre for the annual Christmas party. They were guests of the Chamber of Commerce and local businessmen at the movie and were also given a bag of candy.

Providing space for court-related activities is one of the budget problems facing Archuleta County.

The eventual construction of a new courthouse will ultimately solve the problem. With the idea of building a new courthouse in mind, the commissioners have purchased land for that purpose on Hot Springs Boulevard south of the post office and across the street from the new town hall now under construction.

In the meantime, the county commissioners are wrestling with temporary solutions to help get through this year.

Prodded by a letter from and a work session with County Judge Jim Denvir, the commissioners have agreed to provide additional office and storage space some time this year.

“I know that a long-term solution has been discussed and will take a number of years to implement,” Denvir said. “But our immediate needs are such that it would be appropriate for the commissioners to consider renting office space nearby or renting a portable structure.”
