As flu season approaches, older adults, particularly those aged 65 and older, face a significantly higher risk of sever illness, hospitalizations and even death from influenza.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), most flu-related deaths and hospitalizations occur in this age group.
Vaccinations remain the best defense: It can reduce flu-related hospitalizations by around 40 percent and lessen the severity of illness when flu does occur. For seniors, the CDC recommends high-dose or adjuvanted vaccines designed to provide stronger protection.
Where to get your flu shot in Archuleta County
Local seniors can protect themselves by getting vaccinated at several locations in Archuleta County.
The Archuleta County Public Health Department offers flu shots for older adults and can help schedule appointments or provide information on cost-assistance programs.
Most local pharmacies provide flu vaccinations without an appointment; many accept Medicare and other insurances.
Your primary-care provider can administer the flu shot, review your vaccine history, and recommend the best formula for your age and health status.
By getting vaccinated, older adults not only protect themselves, but also help safeguard their families and community.
Don’t wait; flu season is already underway, and it’s better to get the shot now than risk serious complications later.
Autumn match campaign
We depend on donations as part of our funding to provide our programs and 20,000 lunches a year, including the home-bound using Meals on Wheels. Our other sources of funding are not enough.
You can make a difference. An Archuleta Seniors Inc. (ASI) supporter will donate up to $5,000 if matched between now and Dec. 31. Your donation of $10 becomes $20, $20 becomes $40, $50 becomes $100, or whatever amount you give will be doubled in value.
You can donate to the matching campaign in many ways:
• Call ASI at (970) 264-2167 or stop in and use your credit card, saying it’s for the matching campaign. We are located at 451 Hot Springs Blvd., in the Ross Aragon Community Center (the riverside entrance at the portico).
• You can send a check to ASI, P.O. Box 3444, Pagosa Springs, CO 81147, with “Match” on the memo line, or use this link: https://www.coloradogives.org/organization/ArchuletaSeniors.
November holiday closures
